RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: 

  • Kitchen-Production Manager 

  • Kitchen-Operations Manager 

  • Director of Nutrition Services

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Assists in administering an effective and efficient nutrition service program for Urbandale Schools. Ensuring food of high nutritious quality is made available to every student to maximize each one’s ability to bring learning to life.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

     
    1. Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HAACP) knowledge desired.

    2. Knowledge of quantity food service regulation and techniques for preserving nutritional value.

    3. Knowledge of food service regulation and sanitary codes governing food service operations.

    4. Knowledge of work safety.

    5. Knowledge of security and emergency procedures

    6. Manual dexterity in handling of all equipment.

    7. Physically fit with the ability to lift 50 pounds regularly.

    8. Ability to stand and walk 90% of the workday.

    9. Flexibility to acclimate to drastic changes in the environment.(i.e., hot in kitchen, cold in freezer, etc.)

    10. Ability to work in a kitchen atmosphere, sometimes noisy.

    11. Flexibility to handle peak rush periods.

    12. Demonstrated knowledge of computers.

    13. Ability to see needs of the total operation and assist in critical areas.

    14. Ability to communicate effectively orally and written in English.

    15. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule forms.

    16. Knowledge of record keeping and basic mathematical skills.

    17. Strong customer service skills.

    18. Ability to meet and work with people in a pleasant manner.

  2. Education:

     
    1. High School Diploma or the G.E.D. equivalent. 

  3. Certification/Licensure:

     
    1. Certificate of Completion covering: Nutrition, Food Safety/Sanitation and School Nutrition Orientation (Training will be provided within the first year of working).

    2. ServSafe Certification-Required within one year of hire or when training is available to staff. This training will be at no cost to the employee and a paid day. Failure to pass exam will require employee to redo at their expense and on their own time within 6 months of initial testing. Certification of ServSafe must be maintained throughout employment.

    3. Valid driver’s license.

  4. Experience:

     
    1. 1-2 years of Quantity Food service experience desired.

  5. Equipment:

     
    1. Kitchen equipment.

    2. Computers for the use of record keeping.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

 

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

 
  1. Maintain compliance with state and local health regulations.

  2. Demonstrated knowledge of USDA Meal Pattern Requirements and Nutrition Standards.

  3. Knowledge and ability to perform all nutrition positions within the kitchen or work site to which assigned.

  4. Professionally interact with all personnel, students, building patrons, federal/state inspectors,vendors and delivery drivers.

  5. Assist with the preparation of food and ensure correct quantities are prepared for kitchen and satellite kitchens.

  6. Ensure quality food products.

  7. Assist with set up and serving both breakfast and lunch.

  8. Display and organize food in an attractive manner.

  9. Correctly portions and neatly serves food items.

  10. Ability to identify currency and proper counting of change.

  11. Maintains cleanliness and neatness of work area.

  12. Assists in handling of left-over food appropriately and in accordance with food safety guidelines.

  13. Maintains inventory and orders supplies and food as needed.

  14. Responsible for security of food and supplies.

  15. Assist in maintaining neatness, organization and rotation of stock.

  16. Maintain daily production records and all applicable required forms for the department.

  17. Cleans-up kitchen and serving area, includes but not limited to dishes, sweeping and mopping.

  18. Report to Production Kitchen Manager and/or Administrative Manager and Director of Nutrition Services all relevant matters. 

  19. Ability to drive a car or provide transportation suitable to accommodate responsibilities.

  20. Attend meetings and maintain professional growth through workshops, professional organizations, in-service programs and/or professional materials.

  21. Conduct all responsibilities with a high level of motivation, team orientation and professionalism.

  22. Must be able to interact with students, faculty, and other staff members in a positive manner.

  23. Maintain a reliable attendance record. 

  24. Perform all other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Satisfactory health as certified by a medical authority.

  • Drug, tobacco, and alcohol free while working.

  • Ability to see and hear within normal limits with or without corrective lenses or hearing aids.

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle used to travel between sites.

  • Frequent walking, running, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling lifting 20-50 pounds; using fingers, hands, feet, legs and torso.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Majority of work is done in a kitchen or cafeteria setting. 

  • Occasional exposure to body fluids, fumes, noise, and hazardous materials and emergency situations.

  • Occupational hazards include the possibility of burns from steam or hot liquids, strains from improper lifting, cuts from utensils and related injuries.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • At-will employee.

  • Per Board policies and administrative guidelines.

  • Performance evaluated annually.
