Job Description
Job Summary:  Under the general supervision of the School Principal, mentors and guides high-achieving high school science students in research techniques, gain insight into professional research-based opportunities and develop their academic goals.  Work with educators, scientists, volunteers, teachers, and the public to deliver high quality education program in the area of science research. 
 
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Hold a current NYS certification in Chemistry 7-12, dual certification with other science preferred.
  • Strong background in Chemistry and all areas of science.
  • Background and comfort using technology in innovative ways to enhance the learning experience for students.
  • Solid understanding of science research.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Suite and Google products.
 
 
Primary Activities
  • Work collaboratively to develop and implement inquiry-based curriculum.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Yorktown High School Science Research Team to support student learning in a highly competitive program.
  • Work closely with the science research professionals form regional facilities to help students connect with a mentor with whom to carry out an extended, advanced project (frequent business travel required for research placements at established Westchester and NYC facilities.)  
  • Accompany students at introductory “mentor meeting” with potential mentors.
  • Assist students in finding and understanding advanced information on their research topic of interest such as from professional journal articles.
  • Teach students how to create professional level, hopefully award winning, Poster and PowerPoint presentations for Science Research competitions.
  • Monitor research progress of each student to prepare presentations of research at various science fairs.
  • Accompany students to local, national and international science competitions and symposia including the Regeneron Science Talent Search (Regeneron STS), the International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF), Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (JSHS), Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF), Tri-County Science Fair, and the International Genius Olympiad.
  • Teach skills needed for different public presentations (conferences, competitions, symposia) and guiding the students through all competition rules, regulations and deadlines.
  • Increase support with the parents and/or community through outreach activities.
  • Maintain and/or increase awareness of, and interest in, Science Research Program

While performing the duties of this job, the employee:
  • is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit.
  • Is regularly required to climb, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and to reach above the head and reach forward.
  • Is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls and to talk and hear.
  • At times, required to work at a height of 20’ or more off the ground in order to perform job duties.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or push up to 75 pounds.
  • Must have specific vision abilities for close vision, distance vision, depth perception and tell the difference between colors
 
 
Work Environment
  •  The noise level in the work environment is typical for a school environment.
  • The manager continuously interacts with the public and other staff and frequently meets multiple demands from several people.
  • Work generally performed outdoors and indoors.
