Description

Title of Position:   Education Associate, Elementary Level Mathematics
 
Reports To:   Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development
 
Description of Position:
The Education Associate for Mathematics will provide leadership in the implementation of standards-based curriculum, instruction, and professional development in mathematics in grades K-12 with specific emphasis at the elementary school level.  The scope of work will require significant coordination and collaboration both within the Department of Education and with district and school personnel.  This individual is a member of the Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development workgroup in the Academic Support Team of the Department.
 
Major Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate state meetings and committee work to further the implementation of the Delaware State Standards for Mathematics.
  • Work collaboratively with LEAs and math personnel to support standards-based mathematics curriculum and instruction for all students.
  • Work collaboratively with other DDOE workgroups and state partners to design and deliver a coherent and comprehensive professional development program and Delaware standards aligned resources for K-12 mathematics teachers, math specialists, and school-based teacher leaders.
  • Provide technical assistance in the implementation of the Delaware State Standards for Mathematics.
  • Collaborate with the Secondary Mathematics Education Associate and across work groups on mathematics and other key initiatives.
  • Stay current with quality resources, including high quality instructional materials, and develop and disseminate materials to support best practices in Mathematics curriculum, instruction, and professional development with a focus at the elementary school level.
  • Serve as a representative of Delaware for national collaborative projects and state consortium efforts related to current job responsibilities.
  • Review local curriculum documents for alignment with state mathematics standards.
  • Participate in the design and development of online modules and courses from inception to completion. This will require working within and across workgroups on the application of instructional design principles, learning theories, multimedia, and simulation technologies to support active professional learning.
  • Develop course storyboards, create formats for digital materials, implement course websites, and produce course design documents to support the work of professional learning initiatives.
  • Collaborate to build and support exemplary learning objects and modules along with associated educational materials.
  • Make recommendations for best practices in online education and identify content and technology resources for online teaching and learning.
  • Coordinate and promote the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Work Group Director or the Associate Secretary for the Academic Support Team.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably with a concentration in elementary education and certification in mathematics; Master's degree preferred; eligible for Delaware Educator Licensure and Certification as either an Elementary Teacher.
 
Experience:
  • Minimum of five years successful teaching in K-12 schools in mathematics or similar experience
  • Experience with elementary mathematics instruction; especially K-5
  • Firm knowledge of national trends and Delaware State Mathematics Standards at all grade levels K-12
  • Preferred experience with technical assistance to districts and/or charter schools
  • Experience with planning and delivering professional learning for educators in the area of mathematics
  • Knowledge of national and international models of successful mathematics curricula and comprehensive professional development programs for mathematics teachers
  • Leadership experience with successful K-12 mathematics reform initiatives at the school district and/or state-wide level  

Skills:
  • Knowledge and skills in best practices of professional development with adult learners
  • Knowledge and skills in utilizing technology and digital tools to enhance work productivity, presentations, and professional development with adult learners
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Performs responsibilities with minimal supervision
  • Capable of working in a high pressure environment
  • Capable of setting priorities and working under pressure
  • Able to proactively problem-solve with professionalism
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with staff in a tactful, congenial and personal manner
  • Understands the Department’s organizational aims and objectives 
  • Exercises discretion and confidentiality

Salary:  
Salary will be computed in accordance with the education, experience, and training of the individual selected and in accordance with salary schedules for employees of the Department of Education. Direct deposit of payroll checks is a condition of state employment, and employees are paid on a lag pay schedule with the first payment made after approximately one month of employment.
