Job Description
Job Title:   Science Teacher – Middle School                                   Reports to:     Principal
Job Summary
This position is responsible for providing science education services to middle school students in a classroom and laboratory setting. Student achievement and growth are primarily dependent on the work and efforts of the classroom teacher. The position is demanding, varied and complex and yet as the classroom teacher you must be well trained in science content knowledge and teaching strategies.
Essential Duties and Responsibility
  1. Effectively deliver instruction and content standards as identified by the State of Michigan and the district to help students meet and/or exceed minimum proficiency standards.
  2. Possess a working knowledge of the new Michigan Science standards.
  3. Work to further develop the science curriculum and seek innovative, engaging and motivating instructional approaches.
  4. Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interest and abilities of students.
  5. Assists in the selection of books, equipment, lab supplies and other instructional materials.
  6. Prepares and administers subject/topical specific tests and labs to measure student abilities and progress.
  7. Conducts appropriate assessments of students’ work and maintain accurate and regular data on students in areas of attendance, grades and IEP progress if applicable.
  8. Focus on making learning visible through effective student engagement.
  9. Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral progress of their students through conferences, written messages, telephone calls and or e-mails.
  10. Uses a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  11. Takes all responsible precautions to provide for the health and safety of the students and to protect equipment, materials and facilities.
  12. Monitor, assess and report student progress toward learning target goals.
  13. Frequently communicate with students, parents, counselors and administrators regarding student progress and other matters.
  14. Design and implement appropriate instruction of assigned subjects in accordance with students’ needs, district curriculum, and state standards.
  15. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve learning, health and emotional problems.
  16. Administers state testing in accordance with the District testing practices.
  17. Participates in staff committees and sponsorships of student activities.
  18. Supervise students in the hallways before, after and between classes, and special events.
Other Responsibilities
  1. Maintain professional competence by attending staff professional development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.
  2. Participates in various student and parent activities, in school including PTO, student clubs and after school activities.
  3. Create an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, effective use of technology, and relevant activity learning centers.
  4. Perform other related duties assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrators.
  • Hold current Michigan teacher certification, with strong preference for those qualified / certified to teach Science for grades 6-8 with DI or DX endorsement preferred..
  • Extensive knowledge of Michigan’s State Standards
  • Understanding of the unique aspects of teaching and supporting middle school student
  • Candidates must demonstrate the following:
    • Exceptional skill in planning, delivering and assessing student learning.
    • Effective use of balanced assessments (formative and summative).
    • Exceptional knowledge in research based instructional strategies, data, and systems of MTSS, and ability to implement them effectively.
    • Effective practices for working with students of all ability levels, including differentiated instruction.
    • Ability to integrate technology appropriately to support instruction.
    • Ability to maintain high standards of professional conduct at all times.
    • Commitment to working collaboratively with a focus on student learning.
    • Punctuality, good attendance and strong work ethics in all areas.
    • Ascribe to the philosophy that all children can succeed and demonstrates the commitment to do what is necessary to make this a reality.
