Secondary Math Teacher
Must hold a license issued by Virginia Department of Education.
The license must be in one of the following types: Collegiate Professional License, Eligibility License, Postgraduate Professional License, Provisional License.
The license position area must be in one of the following areas: Algebra I, Algebra II, Calculus, Geometry, Math (General), Pre-Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Probability and Statistics, Trigonometry.
The license must be in one of the following grades: 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th.
The license status must be active or about to graduate from a state-approved teacher preparation program.
General Description: Plan and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students in grades 9 through 12. Manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities, as required; carries out a variety of student monitoring and control activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. • Assesses student ability as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes. • Plans appropriate instructional strategies and activities, including determination of appropriate principals of learning, instructional organization and grouping, kind, and level of materials. • Implements an instructional program which provides appropriate learning experiences for each student. • Manages the behavior of learners in the instructional setting to provide an environment that is conducive to the learning process and assists and participates in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school, center, school grounds, or work site. • Coordinates instructional activities with other professional staff, both school and non-school based, as required to maximize learning opportunities. • Utilizes a variety of instructional materials, media, and computer technology to enhance learning. • Works in self-contained, team, departments, itinerant capacity, or at a field work site, as assigned. • Requests assistance from resource personnel, as needed. • Participates in staff development activities and staff meetings, as required or assigned. • Assess student achievement and maintains appropriate documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes. • Ensures continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of their children’s progress. • Communicates with students on instructional expectations and keeps them informed of their progress in meeting the expectations. • Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement. • Assigns work to and provides direction for instructional assistants, parent, and student volunteers. • Supervises and assigns work to instructional assistants, as well as parent and student volunteers. • Supports or participates in student activities and social events, and approved fundraising activities. • Ensure that classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthy, safe, and conductive to learning and that materials are accessible to students and in good conditions. • Monitors student behavior in non-instructional areas, intervenes to control and modify disruptive behavior, and informs the appropriate administrator. • Collaborates with other professional(guidance counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out school-wide instructional or related activities • Performs related duties as required or assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 1. Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of secondary level instruction. 2. Good knowledge of adolescent growth and development. 3. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs. 4. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of children. 5. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 6. Excellent organizational, planning and human relations skills. 7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, peers, and parents.
