Position: JROTC Army Instructor

Reports To: Building Principal

Salary Schedule / Grade: Refer to DEA Salary Schedule

F.L.S.A Status: Exempt

 

 

SUMMARY

In partnership with the principal and in collaboration with other teachers, the JROTC works to instill in students in secondary educational institutions, the values of citizenship, service to the community and the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment. It incorporates 21st Century learning, supportive of school-wide expectations for learning results promotes healthy lifestyles, develops leadership, strengthens positive self-motivation and enhances global awareness to include providing a historical perspective of military service using district tools and strategies to recognize student achievement, employ appropriate corrective discipline in addition to meeting the diverse student needs of the district.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Meet the challenges of delivering education in an urban school setting.  Use instructional methods to help struggling learners reach grade level; navigate competing instructional initiatives and find ways to apply them to the classroom effectively; and build confidence in student, parents, and guardians that academic achievement is attainable through sustained effort.

  • Collaborate effectively with teachers and administrators to implement instructional strategies that promote student success in content areas.

  • Build positive rapport and trust with families and community partners to facilitate their engagement in education efforts.

  • Participate in district-organized professional development activities and seek out opportunities for self-development to improve instruction design and delivery skills.

 

Responsibilities

  • Manage and conduct the JROTC unit according to school rules, regulations, and policies..

  • The AI (Army Instructor) will assist the SAI (senior Army Instructor) in advising school authorities on policy and regulation changes within CCR (Cadet Command Regulation 145-2

  • Maintain good relations with school authorities, faculty, and the student body.

  • Conduct a public affairs effort in the local area middle and elementary schools, among school and community officials, civic groups, parent-teacher groups and other individuals or groups, designed to further the understanding of JROTC, the school and the Army

  • Enroll students in JROTC and support school officials while executing the curriculum and the integrated extra-curricular activities.

  • Prepare weekly training schedules.

 
  • Maintain contact with parents of all Cadets experiencing academic or behavioral problems.

  • Ensure JROTC unit areas are neat and orderly; current chain of command photos, Cadet creed, core abilities and mission statement are present; and all sensitive items are secured..

  • Ensure instructors share teaching responsibilities. No instructor is exempt from teaching a fair-share of the LET POI. Instructors should teach by expertise and preference in subject areas, rather than strictly by LET levels. All instructors (SAI/AIs) are responsible for teaching the JROTC curriculum.

  • Prepare, administer, grade, and analyze work assignments to evaluate student progress, strengths and areas of need.

  • Provide individualized feedback and guidance to students with the goal of enhancing their academic performance.

  • Integrate technology into instructional delivery when appropriate to enhance or complement learning.

  • Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, or other experiential activities.  Guide students in learning from those activities.

  • Adhere to any and all other regulations set forth in the Cadet Command Regulation 145-2 of the Junior Reserves Officers’ Training Corps Program.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Verifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S.

  • Current and valid State of Ohio teaching licensure appropriate for the specific teaching position

  • Must pass Federal and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation background check in accordance with Ohio Administrative Code Section 3301-83-06

  • In no instance will an AI be higher in rank than the SAI for that JROTC unit nor will two instructors of the same rank/grade be permitted to run a JROTC program




 

Knowledge & Experience

  • Officers must be retired from the Army in the grades of W-1 through W-5 or O-3 through O-6

  • Noncommissioned Officers must be retired from the Army in the grades of E-6 through E-9

  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction, child development principles, and a wide range of instructional and intervention strategies

  • Ability and willingness to utilize technology in the enhancement of student learning

  • Effective time management skills

 

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES/DEMANDS  

  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, stoop, and climb stairs

  • Occasionally lift and/or move lightweight items up to 40 lbs.

  • Ability to read and write to complete forms and reports

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT  

  • Work is performed in a classroom setting

  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue

  • Work may be subject to frequent interruptions

  • Potential for exposure to irate parents or disruptive students

  • Some assignments are subject to completion within strict timelines

  • Periodic travel for meetings, professional development activities, and work assignments
