Elementary School Counselor Job Description
Provides leadership and collaborates with current school counselor and teachers to
provide class guidance lessons that support academic achievement, college and career
readiness and social/emotional success.
Incorporates into their programs post-secondary skills that students need to be successful
in the twenty-first century
Provides leadership to establish and maintain the school counseling program and to
develop activities and resources for the successful implementation and evaluation of the
Provides for the orientation of new students.
Monitors students progress and coordinates an intervention program, which involves
attendance, social/emotional skills, and academic achievement.
Works in collaboration with all staff in a supportive and flexible manner.
Maintains records and completes state and district reports in a timely manner.
Plans and helps conduct special events and activities such as College Go Week, Career
Activities, Red Ribbon Week, Bullying Prevention Week, Child Abuse/Neglect
education, The Great Kindness Challenge, 4 th grade Maturity Program, help with ISTEP
preparation, assist with 7 th grade orientation, bulletin board changes monthly, pack-a-
backpack drive, Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance for needy families, and
Serves as the liaison and referral resource between the school, parents, and outside
providers such as counselors, doctors, psychiatrist, skills coaches, with summary letters
and phone calls to provide continuity of services and updated progress reports for our

Remains readily available to students so as to provide short-term or crisis counseling that

Helps supervise students before, during, and after school as requested by administration.
Helps supervise student activities as needed.
Creates and runs small group interventions as needed.
Assists the administration in student behavior issues to implement necessary

Performs other duties as assigned.
Educates staff on issues requested by administration.
Candidate must be a team player, flexible, and willing to work with others.
Must hold a valid School Counseling license or willing to pursue.
