SCHOOL NURSE POSITION
To provide health services and leadership in establishing a complete and effective program of school health.
- Graduate of an accredited program of registered nursing.
- Current licensure to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia. (CPR and First Aid certified)
- Valid Virginia driver’s license.
- Two years successful working experience with references, giving evidence of competency in nursing care practices.
- Possess qualities of character and personality, which merit the confidence and respect of students, staff, and parents.
- Works with staff as a consultant in defining the health needs of students and in planning the health education program and health services needed to meet them.
- Acts as a resource teacher upon request by a teacher or the principal.
- Provides extra health and dental resource material for teachers.
- Provides individual health instruction and emotional guidance, as appropriate, for the individual student.
- Supplies and adequately maintains the school medical clinic.
- Keeps current and accurate medical records on each student.
- Administers individual screenings of vision, hearing and scoliosis, including evaluation, referral and follow-up as required by Virginia school law and school board regulations.
- Assists with kindergarten registration and interprets health requirements as required by the school board and administrative regulations.
- Makes medical inspections and identifies medical problems. (When a physical defect is found, the information will be shared with other involved school personnel.)
- Reviews health appraisals and follows up on all deficiencies reported.
- Informs the principal of the need for approval of early dismissals for students due to health reasons.
- Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the first aid care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness.
- Supervises all medicine brought to school by students and provides medication only as directed by division guidelines.
- Implements school board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases and conditions of infestation.
- Makes home visits, as appropriate, to assist with health related absentee problems.
- Attends conferences in relation to home, school and community health problems of the student.
- Assists with crisis management within the school division, as needed.
- Offers information and/or opportunities, which promote staff wellness and fitness.
- Serves as a link to community health resources.
- Provides health related services and/or consultation regarding students with disabilities.
- Becomes involved in professional in-service growth.
- Advises school administrators, as needed, on student health-related matters.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the division superintendent and/or designee.
- Abides by all Middlesex County School Board Policies and Regulations.
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the position, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other staff members.

Math Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
Sensory Requirements: Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors.
Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed with the potential for exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease or pathogenic substances.
