Position:                   Secondary Assistant Principal
The primary role of the Assistant Principal is to provide instructional leadership.  Essential responsibilities include curriculum development, implementation of instructional programs and assessment of student achievement.  Ancillary duties include the administration of the athletic department and oversight of the transportation department.  This position will service both the middle school and the high school located on the secondary campus.
  1. MDE endorsed teacher, with a Master’s Degree (minimum).  Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership preferred or its’ equivalent. 
  2. Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience in a public school setting.
  3. Clearly demonstrated effective leadership experience as secondary school administrator, also preferred.
  4. Secondary School Administrator Certification, if applicable.

Tentative Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Serve as an Assistant Principal to the Secondary Principal
            Assistant Principal Duties:
  1. Assists the Secondary School Principal in the overall administration of the school.
  2. Serves as principal in the absence of the regular principal.
  3. Supervises teachers and departments as assigned by the principal.
  4. Evaluates teachers and support staff as assigned by the principal.
  5. Supervises, in cooperation with the office of student services, the preparation of student schedules, progress reports and report cards.
  6. Works with faculty members in compiling annual budget requests.
  7. Requisitions supplies, textbooks, and equipment; conducts inventories; maintains records; and checks on receipts for such materials.
  8. Assists in safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
  9. Supervises the reporting and monitoring of student attendance including investigative follow-up actions.
  10. Responsible in cooperation with other staff in maintaining discipline throughout the student body.
  11. Serves as the lead investigator in suspected incidents of serious student misconduct.
  12. Assists in the presentation of recommendations for long term suspensions and/or expulsions in those situations where long-term suspension and/or expulsion are being recommended.
  13. Administers and oversees the performance and maintenance of the video surveillance system on the campus
  14. Serves with parent, faculty and student groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
  15. Performs such record-keeping functions as the principal may direct.
  16. Serves as information liaison between the school and the community at large.
  17. Maintains open lines of communication with all community organizations.
  18. Coordinates the activities of non-school groups planning in-school information programs such as career days, college recruitment, and armed forces recruitment.
  19. Proposes schedules of classes and extra-curricular activities.
  20. Assists in the development and implementation of School Improvement Plans, School Improvement Grants and other continuous improvement entities
  21. Performs other such tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the principals may assign, including, but not necessarily limited to:
    1. Before School and/or after school detention
    2. Building Use Requests/Scheduling
    3. Emergency Preparedness
    4. First Aid
    5. Attendance
    6. Discipline
    7. Injury/Accident Reports
    8. Lunchroom Supervision
    9. Parking Lot Monitoring
    10. Student Orientation
    11. Open Houses
  22. Other Duties as Assigned
Terms of Employment       
  1. To begin for the 2019/2020 school year
  2. Salary, benefits, calendar as established by the Harper Woods Administrative Association (HWAA) Master Agreement
  3. Performance to be evaluated by the Superintendent of Schools
