Yupiit School District

Description

The Yupiit School District is located in southwestern Alaska, on the Kuskokwim River, northeast of Bethel. The district is comprised of 3 communities: Akiachak, Akiak and Tuluksak. The residents of the three villages are Yup'ik Eskimos. Many are truly subsistence hunters and fisherpersons. The primary language is Yup'ik. The terrain is arctic tundra interspersed with willow, alder, and spruce trees. The Delta is one of the state's primary breeding grounds for ducks and geese. The weather varies from well below zero in the winter to the mid 70s in the summer. Travel to and from the district is primarily by air charter. Local travel can occur by boat in the summer or by truck or snowmobile in the winter when the river is frozen. The Yupiit School District conducts an intensive staff development program. We train teachers in using the Alaska State Standards to develop creative, innovative, culturally relevant lesson plans. All staff members are encouraged to pursue continuing education.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Yupiit School District and community is to ensure all students succeed in any environment by learning Yup'ik and English language and life skills.
